How to identify yourself
In many cases, you will need to verify your identity. The identification required depends on whether you have a Swedish personal identity number or not.
Do you have a Swedish personal identity number?
You will normally identify yourself using a valid Swedish form of identification. Accepted forms include a passport, Swedish driving licence, Swedish Tax Agency ID card, or a national identity card.
Do you not have a Swedish personal identity number?
You can identify yourself using a valid foreign passport or a national ID card. In some cases, we may also accept other forms of identification.
Are you a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA?
In addition to valid identification, you will also need to provide proof of your residence permit.
Why we ask questions
We are legally required to have a good understanding of our customers. When you wish to become a customer, we therefore need to ask questions so that we can understand you and how you intend to use the bank’s products and services.
Examples of questions we must ask
- The purpose of the banking relationship: why you need a bank account and what services you intend to use.
- Source of funds: how much money you expect to deposit into your accounts and where the funds originate from.
- International transactions: whether you expect to make payments to or receive payments from other countries and, if so, which countries.
- Tax residency: the country or countries in which you are liable to pay tax.
Documents you may need to provide
In some cases, you may need to supplement your application with additional certificates or documentation. Examples include:
- Account statements, balance statements, or sale agreements that support information about the origin of your funds.
- An employment certificate if the purpose of opening a bank account is to work in Sweden.
- A letter of admission from an educational institution if the purpose of opening a bank account is to study in Sweden.
